The Long Way to the Light - Original

The Long Way to the Light - Original

Original Available

A sunset traditionally asks to be looked at. Here, Scott makes it something to be reached.

A thin lavender path slips through an unruly foreground toward a horizon almost indecently bright with peach, yellow and coral. But much of the promised spectacle is obstructed by a great dark tangle of vegetation. The painting refuses the clean vista: weeds get in the way, colors clash, and the route wanders. The beautiful thing is visible—but inconveniently so.

Painted entirely with fingers and palette knives, the landscape is built from touch rather than drawn line. Pigment is pressed, dragged, scraped and swept across the canvas, allowing the physical language of paint to mimic the tangled world it describes. Even the path seems less painted than parted through the thicket, a small opening toward the light.
