Water Fills a Footprint 

The sun forgets its hurry here,
sinks slow behind a fence of trees,
and spills like tea across the grasses—
gold going amber.

Grasshoppers stitch the air with sound,
one long seam before the ground.

A crow folds home along the tree line,
black comma on a paling page.

The oaks don't reach for anything.
They just stand there, arms out wide,
catching what light decides to give.

Then blue comes up, the way water fills a footprint—
and the field exhales the whole warm day.
