Lithica - Original

Something rare is happening here. A wild, still-living bouquet and the landscape around it have been forced into the same visual substance. Stems become geological strata, petals resemble clouds, and the earth flows in bands of color like folded stone. The usual boundaries between organism, atmosphere and geology have collapsed.

Most peculiar are the roots. Rather than disappearing politely into the soil, they seem to have taken possession of the entire painting, unfurling into enormous ribbons—as though revealing the secret architecture beneath a bouquet.

There is grit to these flowers. The palette is moody, mineral and occasionally acidic; nothing is trying particularly hard to be pretty. These are flowers as survivors: rooted, weathered and stubbornly modern. Lithica arms the old tradition of flower painting with something considerably stranger.
