Cepheus takes its title from the northern constellation, giving this high-desert nightscape a quiet mythological charge. In the upper sky, the constellations seem to loosen into strange, reaching forms, like the ghostly tentacles of an octopus drifting through the cosmos. Below, the rolling New Mexico hills move like dark waves, punctuated by small piñon trees that rise from the land like sparks, markers, or tiny witnesses beneath the glow.

The painting carries a hidden history. Iris originally painted an octopus into the composition, then later transformed the entire piece into a nightscape when the creature no longer felt right. Yet something of it remains. The buried image becomes a kind of transparent window into the painting’s past, a memory beneath the surface. What began as an octopus now haunts the sky as constellation and atmosphere, turning Cepheus into a luminous meeting place between ocean, desert, myth, and stars.
