This small oil finger painting study carries a surprising charge. Built from straight, ice-crystal strokes—quick, confident, and intentional—the surface feels faceted, as if color has been set rather than blended. Each mark stands on its own, yet contributes to a cohesive rhythm.
A deep amethyst road winds up the center, veering to the right as it climbs. The surrounding trees lean subtly in that direction, as if drawn by the wake of a passing car, their trunks and leaves following an invisible pull of energy. The composition feels caught mid-motion.
Electric contrasts of orange and blue vibrate across the surface, creating a lively tension that animates the otherwise simple scene. In its small scale and sweetness, the piece is a study—an arena for Iris to explore gestural color blocking and directional movement.

Many artists, including myself, like to test out painting ideas by first creating a small study. These petite experiments explore the general color and composition of what might end up becoming a much larger painting one day. Each little piece is a peek behind the curtain, a whisper of what’s brewing in my studio.
Collecting one of these tiny works is a way to be part of the journey from spark to full bloom. Each one can be framed in my favorite ornate black and gold frame.
